Rembember 1940

For my birthday I received one of those wonderfully nostalgic cards telling about events "way back when"...since I was born in 1940 I got one from that year. Here is the cost of living in the year 1940 -- some of you may vaguely remember these...others of you, especially my young granddaughters, will find these incredible..

A NEW HOUSE $3,925.00
AVERAGE INCOME 1,725.00 PER YEAR
NEW CAR 850.00
AVERAGE RENT 30.00 PER MONTH
TUITION TO HARVARD 420.00 PER YEAR
MOVIE TICKET .30 (CENTS) EACH
GASOLINE .11 (CENTS) A GALLON
U.S. POSTAGE STAMP .03 (CENTS) EACH

FOOD COSTS:

GRANULATED SUGAR .59 (CENTS) FOR 10 POUNDS
VITAMIN D MILK .51 (CENTS) PER GALLON
GROUND COFFEE .42 ( CENTS) PER POUND
BACON .40(CENTS) PER POUND
EGGS .19 (CENTS) PER DOZEN
FRESH GROUND HAMBURGER .15 ( CENTS) PER POUND
FRESH BAKED BREAD .08(CENTS) PER LOAF

How times have changed!!!! Makes one wonder what the costs of things will be in another 70 years. What do you think?

  1. I was married in 1952 and in 1954 we drove from California to Illinois to visit family. Later, can't remember what year, we were considering another trip, but decided against it because we feared gasoline out in the desert might be as high as 39 cents!
